Building on Love: A Foundation for Everyday Faith

Ever feel like life throws so much at you? This week at The Oak, we were reminded that amidst all the chaos, there’s one thing that must remain our rock: love. Not just a fleeting emotion, but the deep, intentional love that God shows us. It’s a love that shapes everything — how we live, how we speak, and how we treat the world around us. Let’s explore how we can build our lives on this unshakable foundation.
What kind of love are we really talking about?
The message was clear: the love we’re called to isn't the sentimental kind often portrayed in culture. It’s a conscious choice — a decision we make even when it's inconvenient or costly. Just as Jesus chose to love humanity despite the immense sacrifice, we are called to choose love daily in our relationships and actions. As 1 Corinthians 16:14 reminds us, "Everything that you do must be done with love." It’s not always easy. Sometimes another response feels more natural. But love is the very "building block of the kingdom of God," and building on it often means choosing love precisely when it’s hardest.
How much power do our words really hold?
Our words carry incredible weight — they have the power to build others up or tear them down. As followers of Jesus, our speech should be life-giving, reflecting His heart and His love. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Speaking words of blessing isn't just about being polite; it’s about partnering with God to bring life into every conversation. Every interaction becomes an opportunity to echo "the voice of the Creator." Imagine the transformation in our relationships if we chose to speak blessings instead of criticisms.
Why can't we do this faith journey alone?
God didn’t create us to walk this journey by ourselves. We were made for community — to encourage, strengthen, and support one another. Like strands woven together into a strong rope, we are much stronger together than apart. Ecclesiastes 4:12 beautifully says, "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Our spiritual growth flourishes in the shared joys, struggles, prayers, and encouragement of community life. Community isn't optional; it’s sacred.
How does this foundational love look in action?
Love becomes real and visible when we carry each other's burdens. Just as Christ carried ours, we are called to "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Love in action might look like listening without judgment, offering practical help, standing beside someone in a hard season, or simply being present. It's about choosing to be a companion rather than a critic. Reflecting God's character means living out patience, kindness, and selflessness every day. As Ephesians 5:1-2 encourages us, "Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly beloved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us..."
Life Application This Week:
Reflect: Where today can you intentionally choose love, even when another response feels easier?
Word Choice: Aim to speak words of blessing to at least three people this week. Watch how it changes both you and them.
Connect: Reach out to someone in your faith community. Listen to them, support them, or simply spend meaningful time together.
God's Character: Pick one aspect of God’s character (like patience, kindness, or faithfulness) that you find challenging. Pray for His help to grow in it this week.
Let’s commit to building our lives, our relationships, and our faith on the unwavering foundation of God’s love. It won’t always be the easiest road — but it will always be the strongest, most meaningful way to live.
