Seeing God in the Middle of Your Week: Finding Goodness in Every Day

This week’s service was a powerful invitation to look for God's hand—not just in big events—but in the quiet moments and even the messy parts of our daily lives. Through shared stories, we were reminded that when we cultivate a discipline of noticing God at work, it brings thankfulness, builds trust, and reveals His constant, loving presence. It became a collective moment of giving Him glory for His goodness woven into the fabric of our week.

Can We Really See God in Life's Mess and Challenges?

Sometimes, God meets us in the most unexpected and uncomfortable ways.

Trevor shared a vivid and raw vision during worship. It symbolized someone who felt exposed—like something others might prefer to ignore. The message was clear: God sees that mess. He isn’t repulsed. Unlike others who might walk away, He stays. He lovingly steps into our chaos and begins to clean and heal because He cares deeply for us.

God can also be found in the midst of prolonged challenges. Meghan described a week marked by high pain and fatigue due to a chronic health flare-up. Though thankfulness felt out of reach at first, the situation forced a deeper dependence on God for strength. She became aware of His presence through the kindness of friends delivering meals, a compassionate new boss, helpful counselling, and medical professionals who truly listened. Another story from Elouise revealed how accommodations for chronic pain and a recent autism diagnosis led to needed support at work. In all these situations, God's goodness showed up—not by removing the struggle, but by being faithfully present in it.

How Do We Find Thankfulness in the Everyday?

Thankfulness doesn’t only belong to big, dramatic moments—it’s nurtured by noticing the small blessings we might otherwise overlook.

Wendy shared her gratitude list from the week, showing how this simple practice made her heart feel lighter and more alive. Her list included:

  • Honest conversations with friends

  • Powerful, consistent worship

  • Her son choosing to help an elderly couple instead of gaming

  • Wash-and-go shampoo easing a sore back

  • Safe spaces to offload and find support

  • A reliable (if old!) car

  • The ability to eat out—a luxury not available everywhere

  • The joy and affordability of going to the cinema

  • Welcoming a new face, George, at Warm Space

  • Quick and efficient medical appointments

  • Friendly food bank staff

  • Cheerful railway staff and scenic journeys

  • Time in nature with birds, trees, and sunshine

  • Moments of rest and time with family

  • Even the simple joy of saving a bee by feeding it sugar water

This kind of thankfulness isn't accidental—it comes through daily awareness and deliberate noticing.

Why Does Remembering God’s Faithfulness Build Trust?

Looking back on God's faithfulness helps us trust Him now.

Bev shared how a dying fig tree at home suddenly burst into fruit—an unexpected sign of life and provision. It served as a physical reminder to trust God in unlikely situations.

Another testimony from Hayford looked back to 2013, when his nearly died shortly after their child was born. Despite a critical moment when a doctor left, they prayed and trusted God—and she recovered within hours. That memory became fuel for trust this week, when facing a new opportunity that felt uncertain. God seemed to whisper: “Remember what I did then? You can trust me now.”

Even frustrations became invitations to trust. After Oz's bike was partially vandalized outside the church, initial anger turned to thankfulness—it wasn’t stolen entirely, and a spare battery was available. Prayer for the thief shifted the heart toward grace, even imagining the best “sentence” would be for them to join the church.

Tim is facing career uncertainty, health risks, and house moves and discovered that God was quietly at work behind the scenes—opening doors, sustaining them, and giving peace. Trust deepened through the simple act of remembering.

Life Application

The main takeaway is this: learn to notice God's hand in your everyday life.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where did you feel like “the mess” this week—and how did God show you He sees you and hasn’t walked away?

  • What are 3–5 small things you can be thankful for this week, even if they seem ordinary?

  • How has God been faithful to you in the past? How can that help you trust Him with what you're facing today?

Challenge:

Set a daily reminder on your phone, or write down 1–2 specific things you’re thankful for each night before bed this week. This simple act can help you recognize God's goodness more consistently.

Let’s live in such a way that others give God glory as they see Him at work in and through us.
