Following Jesus isn't just about believing - it's about becoming His disciple. While many people identify as Christians, Jesus actually called us to be disciples - active followers who put His teachings into practice in their daily lives.
Can You Be a Christian Without Being a Disciple?
The simple answer is no. While the world may use "Christian" as a label, Jesus used the term "disciple" to describe His followers. The term "Christian" only emerged later in Antioch when observers labeled Jesus' disciples this way. True Christianity and discipleship are inseparable - they both mean following Jesus.
What Are the Key Marks of a Disciple?
Jesus outlined four clear characteristics of His disciples:
Self-denial - Putting Jesus' will above our own desires and conveniences
Obedience - Remaining faithful to Jesus' teachings and putting them into practice
Love - Showing Christ-like love to others that sets us apart
Disciple-making - Helping others come to know and follow Jesus
How Can I Grow as a Disciple?
Growing as a disciple requires intentional effort and commitment. Key practices include:
Regular prayer and time with God
Reading and studying Scripture
Serving others using your gifts
Being in fellowship with other believers
Participating actively in church community
Why Discipleship Isn't a Solo Journey
While it's technically possible to follow Jesus alone, discipleship flourishes in community. The early church devoted themselves to:
Learning together
Fellowship
Breaking bread
Prayer
Regular gatherings
This pattern of doing life together remains vital for growing disciples today.
Life Application
This week, evaluate your discipleship journey by asking:
In what areas of my life am I truly denying myself to follow Jesus?
How consistently am I putting Jesus' teachings into practice?
Does my life demonstrate Christ-like love that others can see?
Who am I helping to know and follow Jesus better?
Challenge:
Choose one area of discipleship (self-denial, obedience, love, or disciple-making) where you feel weakest.
Make a specific plan to grow in that area this week through prayer, Scripture study, and intentional action.
Remember - discipleship isn't about reaching perfection, but about pressing on to follow Jesus more closely each day.
As the Apostle Paul said, "Not that I have already obtained this...but I press on toward the goal" (Philippians 3:12).
